Sometimes we find some of the strangest sights in nature. Around 400 pine trees are found in the northwest of Poland which appears to be almost normal but they are not. The base of these trees makes you feel that you have entered a strange and beautiful fairy tale. All the trees look alike and bend in the same northward 90-degree at the base of their limb. This is known as the “Crooked Forest,” and its uniqueness still remain an unexplained mystery.
All the trees in the Crooked Forest have the same horrifying bend, but despite that all of the trees have grown to be tall and are not hampered by their C shape curves. Some experts think that these trees grew like this as the trees went through some sort of damages at the tip and also along the side branches.
The trees are recovering from adversity and are making steady progress relying on one branch that take over the complete process and grow upwards. The damage caused to one tree might have happened to them all because they remain uniform in this misshapenness.
The Crooked Forest is around 80 years old. It is estimated that the damage that made them look like this today occurred when the trees were around 7 years old. It was the time before the Second World War reached Poland.
The story of the “Crooked Forest” goes like this- in 1930 some farmers intentionally damage the base while planting these trees in order to create some sort of product like furniture etc. The world may never know if it’s true because the farmers were unable to finish their work after the invasion of Poland during World War II dismantled their plans.
The trees were grown like this to make furniture, ship mantels, and any other woodworking projects. The practice of growing trees with a curve in the branch for making wooden furniture is known as “compass timbers.”
It seems unexplained and odd that these trees are now crooked because someone’s work was never completed. Some also think that a snowstorm could have made these trees into a bent position until the snow and ice melted and spring comes. But the guesses can be many when it comes to the unsolved mystery of the “Crooked Forest”. Apart from the Crooked Forest there are plenty of trees in the area which grow up straight from the roots without the curve.
“Crooked Forest” is a unique formation in a seemingly ordinary place, so many of us keep wondering why the locals their have no answers to what caused its formation. This may be because the local town was destroyed during the World War. The town began to reestablish in the 1970’s when a new power and heat plant came to the town. The Crooked Forest is located right near this power plant, known as Dolna Odra (‘Lower Oder’) power plant.
Tourists come to enjoy many beautiful and natural sceneries located in the area but the Crooked Forests remain unexplainable. The Crooked Forest is located in a suburb called Gryfino in the Zachodniopomorskie province so when you visit Poland you can visit the 22 rows of uniquely shaped trees. Your first glance at the forest can start your wild imagination and its historic roots speak- as if trees could talk.
